Boundless Way Zen

Teachings and instruction

SHOKEN
with Roshi James Ishmael Ford

Shoken literally means, "seeing one another," and is the ceremony by which one formally undertakes the Zen way under the guidance of a particular teacher. If after practicing with the sangha for some time you feel the need for a clear relationship of spiritual direction, you may apply to become a shoken student with James.

To apply, write a spiritual autobiography that includes a reflection on what you feel to be the most important spiritual issues facing your life at this time; and present it to James’s jisha, or attendant.

James will consider the application and will respond.

If accepted as a candidate for shoken, prior to the ceremony you will need to prepare a draft covenant outlining the areas you would like to focus on for the year. It will include the following.

It will acknowledge the understanding that James will serve as primary spiritual director.

It will include a realistic expectation of practice on a weekly schedule. (ie: daily, three times a week, whatever seems achievable)

It will include plans for attending half or full day retreats and, if possible, sesshin.

It will include some commitment to supporting the life of the sangha.

It will outline a reading plan focusing on Buddhism and Zen.

It will address some form of social engagement.

It will outline some creative endeavor.

The draft text will be discussed between you and James, and a final draft will be agreed to. Both you and James will sign the covenant at the shoken ceremony.

The covenant will be revisited as needed, but at least once a year.
